Good eats along Calgary’s 17th Avenue

It had been quite some time since I’d been in Calgary and, more specifically, on 17th Avenue SW. I’m going to say 7 years…has it really been that long since we moved??

So, on our recent spring break, I was able to enjoy and view this great Canadian city through the lens of a tourist. No work, no carpools, no rush-hour traffic – we were simply there as visitors.

Flowers for no reason

There’s been a lot going on at our house lately. Some big changes are in the works and things will be great once we get over the hump…you know what I’m saying?

My husband has been working out of town…a lot. We all miss him, especially the kids. They keep asking when he’s going to be home and even though they don’t say it, I know they would much rather be doing their math homework with him. Even the dog seems out of sorts knowing that something is up.

Ladyballs

There is an ad campaign that’s garnering a lot of attention these days. And I just want to say “Bravo!” to Ovarian Cancer Canada for coming up with a smart, funny and rather cheeky advertisement to create awareness for an under-recognized disease.

The ad encourages women to have the “Ladyballs” to disagree with a male colleague, to ask a guy out on a date, etc. You get the idea. It states that “women have balls too, and they’re at risk.”

If you haven’t seen the TV version of the ad, you can watch it here.

Vitamix is helping us “go green” with our smoothies

It’s been about a month, but I think I’m finally getting the hang of using my Vitamix. You see, this super-duper blender and I have had some “issues”… mainly because I take after my mom and have trouble following directions when cooking. Doesn’t anyone else like to wing it??

Seriously, there are a few good things to know if you are considering getting this blender or if you are a newbie like me.

Family vacation to Turks and Caicos

So beautiful! It’s the first thing I say when people ask me about our recent trip to Turks and Caicos. At times, I felt like I had to pinch myself – is this real?? It was absolutely what our family needed after a busy fall and holiday season.

The first thing you notice flying into Providenciales, the main island of Turks and Caicos, is the turquoise crystal clear water. From the air, you can easily see the reef surrounding the island, making it one of the best snorkeling and diving destinations. It also makes for calm, relatively shallow waters, which is great for kids and those who aren’t fond of bashing waves (that would be me!).

Two empty seats at my Christmas table

I am very thankful at this time of year for my wonderful family and friends. I feel truly blessed to share this holiday with my sweet mom and sister, my amazing husband, children and so many others. But there are always two special people missing at my Christmas table. I’m re-posting this (my first ever blog post!) in honour of them. When my oldest daughter read it, she cried for the aunt and grandfather she never knew. I’ve decided to share it here because it has shaped who I am today, how I view things and what I want this blog to be about – family, love and living life!

Amazing scenery along California’s Pacific Coast Highway

California’s famous Highway 1 – a cliff-hugging oceanfront drive along California’s Central Coast stretching from Monterey to Morro Bay – is touted as one of the top road trips in the United States. My husband enjoys driving, so this was our opportunity.

We were on our way from San Francisco (you can read about our SF trip here) to Los Angeles, so we loaded the three kids into the back of our car, and hit the road!
