Calgary R&B/pop artist Ruben Young to make special appearance

For some women in Calgary, including single moms, immigrant and low-income women, the road to successfully landing a job can be a long one. The final stumbling block can be one that all women face at one time or another — what to wear??

There’s no question how you’re dressed influences your confidence and how you express yourself. But many of these women are more worried about putting food on the table rather than what’s in their closet.

Dress for Success does great work in our city by providing women with professional and fashionable clothes at no cost to them. So far this year, the charity has outfitted more than 170 women who’ve been referred by participating agencies.

“When clients first come to see us and they come out of the change room, it’s always amazing to see the look in their eyes and how their confidence builds,” says Jaclyn Edwards, public relations director at Dress for Success Calgary.

The women also receive career coaching through a new partnership with Boyden WORKshop mentorship program. The program equips women will the professional tools needed to achieve economic independence.

The charity is run entirely by volunteers here in Calgary and they’re super excited about a great event coming up next week.

LOCALyyc is a fashion show fundraiser taking place at Trolley 5 on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 7 pm. Sophia Models will take the runway featuring fashions from four local clothing consignment stores. Danielle’s, The Clothing Bar, SalvEdge and Kristen’s Consignment will showcase fall/winter looks and evening wear.

Guests will be treated to the music of local artist Ruben Young

Calgary’s own R&B/pop artist Ruben Young will provide the musical entertainment.

It’s been a huge year for Young. He released his first single, Bad Habits, in August and opened for the Chainsmokers at Stampede.

Tickets are available exclusively through Shop Net TV and I’m pleased to be the emcee for the event. I hope you’ll join us for what’s going to be a great night of fun, fashion and philanthropy. The ticket price is $30.

Proceeds go towards the suiting program at Dress for Success

“It’s so great when women come back to us because they got the job, and are able to go onto the next stage of our suiting program by getting more outfits from our boutique,” says Edwards. “Our stylists give them very versatile pieces.  It’s always exciting to help them get ready to start their new job.”

You can donate these much-needed items to the Dress for Success boutique located at 1008 14th St. SE:
