Vitamix is helping us “go green” with our smoothies
It’s been about a month, but I think I’m finally getting the hang of using my Vitamix. You see, this super-duper blender and I have had some “issues”… mainly because I take after my mom and have trouble following directions when cooking. Doesn’t anyone else like to wing it??
Seriously, there are a few good things to know if you are considering getting this blender or if you are a newbie like me.
We ordered our Vitamix from Costco. My husband did most of the research and found it to be the best “package” deal – we were able to order the colour and size we wanted. We went for the low-profile model since we enjoy having it sit on the countertop and fit underneath the cupboards.
We also received a cookbook full of recipes, two portable smoothie carriers and two tampers. What is a tamper? We’ll get to that in a bit…
So, why did we get a Vitamix? Well, it all started when my sister entertained us at her cottage this summer for breakfast.
She whipped up two smoothies – a fruit blend for the kids and a fruit/veggie one for the adults. I couldn’t believe the taste and especially the texture – so smooth, not lumpy like my own. I was also surprised that the adult smoothie had no added milk or sugar – literally, just the fruit, veggies and ice cubes!
So, I was interested…and then sold, after talking with our pediatrician about the daily serving of fruits and vegetables for our family. Well, we weren’t on target, and neither are most people. Figures from the CDC show that less than 15% of adults achieve the daily recommended servings of whole fruit and vegetable. So, I thought maybe the Vitamix could help us.
We purchased the Vitamix 7500. Let me tell you this thing is “industrial strength” and no wonder it’s considered the blender of choice for professional chefs. We are talkin’ some serious horsepower!! You can blend, chop, cream, puree, whip and frappe to your heart’s content.
Take 2… it is VERY IMPORTANT to load the ingredients in the specified order, with the softer more liquified stuff on the bottom and then the stringy stuff (like spinach and kale) on the top. Also, DON’T try to put frozen fruit or ice cubes in first. If you are going to use frozen stuff, I find it helps to put some sort of liquid in first, like a cup of water or milk.
Be careful to always use your tamper – a stick-like tool that gets the air bubbles out – WITH the lid. The shape of the tamper is specially designed to work with the lid so it doesn’t get blended too!
My kids LOVE smoothies, so no trouble getting them to drink up all this goodness. They are a little leery of anything green, but my husband and I love smoothies with kale and spinach, as long as you add some amount of fruit to help offset the sometimes bitter taste. We also like to throw in some protein powder for that extra oomph!
There are so many great recipes I’m excited to try – fall soups, salsas, dressings, dips and cocktails!! I’ll leave you with my favourite smoothie recipe…to date. I feel so great drinking this every morning, knowing that I’m already halfway towards my fruit and veggie intake for the day!
Green Pick Me Up Smoothie
- 1/2 cup green grapes
- 1/2 orange
- 1/2 apple, seeded
- 2 cups Swiss Chard (I prefer spinach)
- 2 cups ice cubes
- Place all ingredients into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure lid.
- Select Variable 1.
- Switch machine to Start and slowly increase speed to Variable 10.
- Blend for 30 seconds, using the tamper if needed.
Per serving: 70 calories, 3 g fiber, 1 g protein. Recipe from Vitamix Simply Fresh cookbook.
