Athleta is one of my favorite places to buy work out clothes, so you can imagine how excited I was to learn that the store now has a line of active wear for young girls.

Athleta Girl is designed for girls between the ages of 6-14 with the sporty girl in mind, but this stuff is cute enough that it can be worn anywhere!

Plus, the sporty look is very much “in” these days, have you noticed?

I finally made it down to the Athleta store at Town and Country Village in Houston – this is the ONLY store in Texas currently carrying the girls’ line.

It made its debut April 26th, and while the selection is somewhat limited for now, there were definitely some fun patterns and pieces that caught my eye.

Athleta Girl covers a wide range of sports including running, dance, soccer, gymnastics, basketball and swimming. It features favorites from its women’s line such as running shorts, tanks, capris and swimsuits (one piece and bikinis). There are also T-shirts, bootie shorts, rashguards and I also spotted some adorable headbands. Each item comes with an elastic hairband printed with an inspiring message (there are five different ones to collect) and a re-usable drawstring bag.

My 10-year old daughter is a dancer and spends a lot of time in stretchy, comfy clothes, so I thought this would be a great outfit that she could wear to both dance practice and camp this summer.

The shorts are lightweight, lined and have lots of discreet pockets; one in the back and one on each side. They come in a variety of colors including pink, black and multi-color.

This tank is made of a sheer, lightweight fabric with a built-in sports bra. I love the pattern on the straps and the X-back.

She loves this outfit and has been wearing it a lot since I brought it home. She even used the drawstring bag it came in for a sleepover last weekend.

So, you are probably wondering about price? Athleta Girl says its clothes are, on average, 33% cheaper than Ivivva, a popular Canadian-made line of clothing for young active girls. The tank top from Athleta Girl was $38 and the shorts were $32. It does seem to be slightly less expensive than Ivivva, but the selection is not quite as varied…at least not yet.

The Town and Country location of Athleta is considered a “high volume” store, which is why it was selected to carry the Athleta Girl line. No word on whether we’ll be getting Athleta Girl at the Woodlands Mall location but here’s the good news…they do happily accept returns and you can order and have it shipped to the store for free! There is free shipping to your home on a $50 or more purchase.

I have come to know and trust the Athleta brand. It is high-quality clothing that holds up well to sweat, friction and frequent laundering. You get what you pay for! I’m certain Athleta Girl will become a go-to spot for tween girls who are on the move, just like their moms.
