Forget the cowgirl stereotype, denim these days is hot, hot, hot and you don’t belong anywhere near a ranch or a farm if you’re wearing the cute items I’m about to show you.

I know here in Houston everybody starts looking for denim pieces in February, so they will have something “country” to wear to the Houston Rodeo.

The good news is that denim is so popular right now that you can wear it right through spring, summer and fall! I think it’s suitable to wear out to lunch with friends, for a night on the town or just running errands. As a busy mom, I really like this look because it’s comfortable and very practical and… can I be honest?? I picked up this Gap denim dress last week at Style Encore, a resale shop, for $15!!

Do you know the difference between denim and chambray? Neither did I until I did a little research. They are basically the same thing, except denim is woven diagonally. It’s usually heavier and used for jeans and jackets, while chambray is plainly woven, and is traditionally used for shirts.

Right now the Gap has a great selection of denim and chambray – everything from a chambray romper to shorts and a great shirtdress.

When shopping for a dress, I’d look for a denim that is light and airy and super soft to the touch…it’s easier to wear during hot and sticky weather. A sleeveless denim dress would be even better and you could layer it with a cardigan for fall.

A chambray or denim dress is a great investment because you can wear it from the start of spring right through until the end of fall – that’s about 8 months here in Houston! In the spring and summer you can wear it with strappy sandals, and then add some great riding boots in the fall.

Here are a few more denim dresses I like that are stylish and very affordable. I mean…$10 at Forever 21?? You can click on the images below for more information.

Be patient while looking for just the right denim dress…you might have to try a few different styles to get the look that you like the best. There can be a tendency for them to look a bit frumpy, but trust me, there are some cute ones out there. I think the key is finding one that either cinches at the waist or has a belt so it gives you a defined waistline.

And, if you’re willing to dig a little, try a second hand store like I did…you might just stumble upon a great fashion find for a bargain price!
